Innovative Piling Solution Built On Solid Grounds

An innovative new piling solution that provides on demand piling grout has been an unprecedented success for CPI EuroMix – so much so, groundworks contractor Abbey Pynford has come back for more.

Currently on site at 1 Tudor Place, the project is CPI EuroMix’s third consecutive contract with the Watford-based piling specialist. Located in the heart of central London, it showcases exactly why the on-demand piling grout supply system is proving so popular.

The £20 million scheme will see the construction of a new seven-storey office complex. It will comprise a double basement, steel frame structure with hollow ribbed floors and full height glazing units set within aluminium curtain walling, together with a Category A fit out.

Before the construction of the new building could start, a 30 week demolition programme was undertaken. Following this, Abbey Pynford was called upon to reinforce the ground with 150 piles – 350mm in diameter and up to 25 metres deep over two levels – spread across a basement and a lower ground floor. Further complicating matters, Abbey Pynford must also work around existing piles, some of which are up to 1 metre in diameter.

With such a complex project and a tricky central location, the innovative CPI solution of producing piling grout on site, on demand, offered the ideal method of ensuring maximum site efficiency.

The system utilises CPI EuroMix’s distinctive Silo Mixing stations to prepare fine concrete, which can then be discharged, via a connecting pipe, around the site to create piles as soon as they are required.

By eliminating the need for ready-mix tanker deliveries, there is no waiting around or lost man hours on-site. It also means that inner city projects, such as Tudor Place, avoid the logistical nightmare of directing large vehicles through heavily congested roads. Plus, there is never any concern over access to site.

Originally developed for the on-site production of mortar and render, the Silo Mixing stations mean operators can produce the exact amount of material required, eliminating unnecessary waste. This means Abbey Pynford is able to install the piles quickly and efficiently.

Craig Macklin for Abbey Pynford, commented: “The CPI silo mixing station offers a much more reliable and efficient method of delivering piling concrete when compared to ready-mix deliveries.

“Ready-mix deliveries are often delayed due to traffic and many sites, especially in city centres, have restricted access. Being able to produce concrete on demand is a much more effective way of ensuring the project stays on schedule.”

This latest contract follows CPI Euromix’s involvement with Abbey Pynford at Holland Park and Bayswater – both extensive and challenging refurbishment projects to London hotels.

Like all CPI products, the foundation grout is manufactured under the BS EN ISO 9001:2000 quality system – the international standard of excellence – and is available from the company’s network of plants throughout the UK and Ireland.

The project at 1 Tudor Street is due for completion in July 2009.
